## The short answer

There is no single best AI image generator in October 2026; there are clear winners for specific jobs.

- **Highest rated by public vote:** OpenAI's **GPT Image 2.5** (Sunburst first, Flare second on the Artificial Analysis arena on 14 October 2026).
- **Best value among the top models:** Google's **Nano Banana 2.1**, from $0.0336 an image, fourth on the same board. GPT Image 2 costs $0.053 at medium quality.
- **Cheapest per image:** OpenAI's **GPT Image 1 Mini** ($0.005) and **GPT Image 2** ($0.006) on their lowest quality settings, or **FLUX.2 [klein] 4B** at $0.014.
- **Text and design:** **Ideogram** for typography, **Recraft** for real vector (SVG) output.
- **Art direction:** **Midjourney V8.2**, by subscription only.
- **Open weights you can use commercially:** **FLUX.2 [klein] 4B**, **Z-Image-Turbo** and the **2025 Qwen-Image** releases, all Apache 2.0.

We compared twelve models on what their makers publish: price, licence, access and stated strengths. We did not run our own scoring; where we mention quality, we cite a public leaderboard with its date.

## Five things most comparison articles get wrong

Image models changed fast in 2026, and a lot of pages still describe last year's line-up. As of 14 October 2026:

1. **Imagen 4 is gone.** Google shut it down in the Gemini API on 17 August 2026. Its replacement, **Nano Banana 2.1**, became generally available on 6 October 2026.
2. **OpenAI's current API image models are GPT Image 2.5 Flare and Sunburst**, not GPT Image 1. GPT Image 2 arrived on 21 April 2026 (date as reported by TechCrunch); 2.5 followed on 8 September, according to OpenAI's developer account.
3. **Midjourney is on V8.2** (24 July 2026), not V7.
4. **"Open weights" often means non-commercial.** FLUX.2 [dev] (32B) and klein 9B, Ideogram 4.0's weights and the new Qwen-Image-2.1 are all under non-commercial licences. Some pages, Wikipedia among them, list Ideogram 4.0 as Apache 2.0; only its inference code is. Qwen-Image-2.1 breaks with the Apache 2.0 licence of Alibaba's 2025 Qwen-Image releases.
5. **FLUX 3 exists.** Black Forest Labs announced it on 23 July 2026 as one model for image, video and audio. Our [FLUX.2 explainer](https://secretcrush.ai/blog/flux-2-explained) covers what is released and what is not.

## The comparison table

*Official list prices on each maker's API at the time of writing, for one standard-size image unless stated. Licences from each model's own licence file. Checked 14 October 2026.*

Two notes. OpenAI prices GPT Image 2.5 in tokens, so the cost of one picture depends on its size and quality; its older GPT Image 2 is priced per image at $0.006, $0.053 or $0.211 for low, medium and high quality at 1024 by 1024. Midjourney's plan prices and Ideogram's API prices come from third-party reports, not the makers' own pricing pages.

## What the leaderboard says

The Artificial Analysis text-to-image arena ranks models by blind public votes. On 14 October 2026 its top five were:

| Rank | Model | Elo |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst | 1217 |
| 2 | GPT Image 2.5 Flare | 1209 |
| 3 | GPT Image 2 | 1188 |
| 4 | Nano Banana 2.1 | 1173 |
| 5 | Grok Imagine Image 2.0 | 1167 |

Microsoft's MAI-Image-2.6 was sixth at 1164 and Meta's Muse Image eighth. The gaps are small: 50 points separate first and fifth. Treat the board as a shortlist, not a verdict, and check it again before you choose; it changes weekly.

## Verdicts by use case

**You want the best-looking result and do not mind the price.** GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst. OpenAI describes Flare as the small, fast option with quality comparable to GPT Image 2, and Sunburst as the one for quality and edit control.

**You want strong quality at a low price.** Nano Banana 2.1 costs $0.0336 for a 1K image. GPT Image 2 is cheaper on its low setting ($0.006) but costs $0.053 at medium quality. Google also offers Nano Banana Pro ($0.134 at 1K or 2K) for harder prompts with lots of text.

**You need text in the image: posters, menus, packaging.** Ideogram reports an OCR score of 0.97 for text in Ideogram 4.0 images (its own figure); GPT Image 2 and Nano Banana Pro are also strong at legible text, by their makers' accounts.

**You design logos or icons.** Recraft V4 and V4.1 produce real, editable SVG files rather than pictures of vectors.

**You care most about mood and style.** Midjourney V8.2. It has no public API, according to third-party reports, so it suits people working by hand rather than developers.

**You edit existing images or keep a character consistent.** Nano Banana 2.1 (Google cites subject consistency), FLUX.2 with up to 8 reference images, and Qwen-Image-Edit-2511 (which Alibaba says improved multi-person consistency) are built for it. Our [guide to consistent AI characters](https://secretcrush.ai/blog/consistent-ai-character-images) compares the approaches.

**You want to run a model yourself and sell what you build.** Pick an Apache 2.0 or MIT model: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B, Z-Image-Turbo, Qwen-Image-2512 or HiDream-I1 (MIT, 17B). Read the licence before you download anything; a model with "open weights" and a non-commercial licence will not cover a paid product.

## Open weights against an API

The choice is not only about quality.

| | Open weights | API only |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Your GPU and engineering time; no per-image fee | Pay per image; no hardware |
| Control | Fine-tune, train add-ons, choose your own filters | Fixed model; the provider's filters apply |
| Licence | Ranges from Apache 2.0 to non-commercial to region-restricted | The provider's terms |
| Quality | Usually a step behind the best closed models | Usually best at the hardest prompts and text |
| Responsibility | Whoever runs it carries the safety duties | The provider moderates and watermarks |

Licences vary more than most people expect. Stability AI's Stable Diffusion 3.5 is free only for organisations with up to $1M in annual revenue. Tencent's HunyuanImage licence does not apply in the EU, the UK or South Korea at all.

## Adult content: what the mainstream tools allow

Most mainstream generators do not allow adult content. Google's policy prohibits "sexually explicit content"; Ideogram's terms ban sexually explicit output; ByteDance's BytePlus policy and Stability AI's use policy do the same, and Stability's applies to self-hosted weights too. OpenAI's Model Spec says its models should not generate explicit adult content outside narrow scientific, historical, news or artistic contexts.

Black Forest Labs and Recraft have no blanket ban, but both ban intimate images of real people made without consent, and BFL's API still filters requests. In January 2026 the European Commission opened formal proceedings against X over sexualised images made with xAI's Grok. We could not confirm xAI's or Midjourney's current written rules, so the table says so.

Our [explainer on why AI image generators block adult content](https://secretcrush.ai/blog/why-ai-image-generators-block-adult-content) goes through the reasons: terms, app stores, card networks and new laws.

Adult-focused services for verified 18+ users exist separately from these tools, under their own terms and age checks.

If you work with video too, our [AI video generator comparison](https://secretcrush.ai/blog/best-ai-video-generators) covers what is still available after Sora's shutdown, with prices per second.

## How we checked

We read each maker's own model pages, prices, licences and usage policies, and the Artificial Analysis arena, on 14 October 2026. We did not generate test images or score the models ourselves.

## The easier way: SecretCrush AI

Every model above asks you to choose an API or a GPU, pay per image and learn its prompting habits. If you want great pictures of a character rather than a new tool to master, **SecretCrush AI** is the shortcut.

- **Fast.** High-quality character images in about 10 to 15 seconds, and videos in about 40 seconds per clip.
- **No set-up.** No installs, no GPU, no workflows, no prompts to tune.
- **Consistent.** The same character keeps the same look from one picture to the next.
- **Alive.** You chat with your character in immersive, realistic roleplay and ask for a picture or a video right inside the conversation.
